There are so many things we recycle these days and computers are filled with components that should not end up in our landfills. There are alternatives to throwing out your old computer that you might not have even thought of. Here are some alternatives that might help you decide what to do with your old computer when the time comes to upgrade.

Sending Your Old Computer To The Manufacturer

There are several major computer manufacturers that offer recycling programs to help you deal with that old laptop of desktop responsibly. If you purchase a new computer through one of these companies, they will take your old computer and recycle it properly for you at no cost to you. While not every company does this, check with whoever you bought your computer from because there are several that will work with you and they may even pay the shipping on the computer. If you are not sure if the company you just bought a new computer from offers recycling, you can call the customer support line and ask about it. They will be able to give you the details.

Local Computer Recycling

If you can't send your computer in, you might want to ask the local computer shops if there is a recycling program in your area. Many cities have them now and these are the people that will know. If there is no recycling program in your area, the computer shop may buy your old computer for the parts. They will not offer much but if it is not running, there is not a lot more you can do with it. In some cases, these shops will refurbish and repair the computer then sell it at a low price so that someone in the market for a computer with a tight budget can buy it. Other times the good parts may go into another computer to make one good machine from several computers.

Pass It On

There are a lot of people that can not afford a decent computer so if you have purchased a new one and are looking for a way to put your old computer to good use, you might consider donating it to charity. There are many organizations out there that will take your old pc or laptop and refresh it so that it can be passed on to a family or individual that needs one. Passing it along to a family with kids that allows them to use that computer for homework and household needs is a good cause and keeps the materials from the computer boards and electronic components out of the landfills. Make sure you clean any personal data off the computer before donating it to a charity so that you don't accidentally pass along your address or banking info with the computer.
